To order food in English, start with a polite opener like "Could I have the burger, please?" Say "I'll have the pasta" to sound relaxed and natural, or "Can I get a coffee?" in a casual US cafe. From there, the whole meal follows a friendly, predictable script.

This guide walks through that script stage by stage — arriving, ordering, changing an order, and paying — so nothing takes you by surprise.

Arriving and being seated

When you walk in, a host may greet you before you say a word. The key question is whether you booked ahead.

Phrase When to use it
Table for two, please Arriving without a booking
We have a reservation under [name] You booked ahead
Just the two of us Answering "How many?"
Could we sit by the window? A polite seating request

You may hear "Have you booked?" or "Do you have a reservation?" — both ask the same thing. A simple "No, we just walked in" is a perfectly natural answer.

Placing your order

There are three natural ways to order, from polite to casual. All are correct — pick the one that fits the place.

Phrase Register
Could I have the salmon, please? Polite — works everywhere
I'll have the pasta Natural and relaxed
Can I get a latte? Casual (common in US cafes)
For starters, I'd like the soup Ordering in courses

English ordering is built on polite questions, not commands — "Could I..." and "Can I..." do the heavy lifting. If question forms feel shaky, our guide to asking questions in English breaks down the pattern.

The server's questions, decoded

Servers ask a small set of questions again and again. Learn to recognize them and you'll never freeze.

You hear A natural answer
Are you ready to order? "Almost — could we have a minute?"
How would you like that cooked? "Medium, please." (steak, eggs)
Anything else? "That's everything, thanks."
How is everything? "Great, thanks!" (a quick mid-meal check)
For here or to go? "For here, please." / "To go, please."

"How is everything?" is not a real request for feedback — a server drops by mid-meal and expects a quick "Great, thanks!" You don't need to stop eating or say anything more.

In the US you'll hear "For here or to go?" For the same idea, the UK says "Eat in or take away?" — worth knowing both.

Changes and special requests

Kitchens expect small changes. Ask with "Could I get..." or "Is it possible..." and you'll sound polite, not fussy.

Phrase When to use it
Could I get that without onions? Removing an ingredient
Is it possible to make it less spicy? Adjusting the dish
Could we get some water, please? Asking for extras
Do you have anything vegetarian? Checking the options

Asking for the check

At the end, you ask for the bill — and here US and UK English split.

US UK
Could we get the check, please? Could we get the bill, please?
Can we split it? Shall we split it?
Separate checks, please Separate bills, please
Can I pay by card? Can I pay by card?

In the United States, a tip at a sit-down restaurant is customary — around 15–20% is the widely known convention, and it works as a social custom rather than a rule. In the UK, Australia, and much of the world, tipping is lighter or a service charge is already added to the bill. When in doubt, glance at the check for "service included."

As you leave, one warm line does a lot of work: "Everything was delicious, thank you!" It's the natural way to thank the staff and end on a high note.
